The 25 Best Commanders In MTG LOTR Tales of Middle-earth – 11. The Watcher in the Water

While a sea monster deck has some stiff competition in the command zone, this is the first time we’ve gotten a creature that fits the archetype that is quite so efficient. Five mana for a 9/9 is literally huge, and that’s not counting the pile of tentacles that it can bring to the table. Of course, you’ll have to work hard to actually get it to untap (that’s a lot of stun counters!) but being able to spread stun counters around the table is awesome.

More than anything else, the deck building challenge that The Watcher In the Water represents is a big part of what drives it up the list, needing a unique combination of instant speed draw and sacrifice engines to really get going (to say nothing of potentially untapping other Krakens). Just going by rule of cool, this card is sick.
