One of the most significant additions to Magic: The Gathering in the past few years has been the proliferation of Showcase Frames on cards. No longer are we restricted to just the usual frame, as now we see cards with various unique treatments. Extended, Borderless Frame, exotic foils, the list goes on — but much more notable than these variations is when cards feature a Showcase variant.

Showcase cards come in all sorts of different styles, usually related to the plane with which the card is associated, and you know that if there is an assortment of different things that can be compared and set against one another in a subjective manner, I’m going to do it. It’s time to rank the ten best Showcase Frames we’ve seen so far!

10 Ixalan: Treasure Showcase

Some Showcase Frames are very divisive. Not everyone likes the visuals, and while some are enormously popular and sought-after, some generate a lot of debate of how good they look (while other, less fortunate Showcase Frames are more or less universally despised no matter what, sorry Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation). The Ixalan Treasure treatment is a decent example of a divisive showcase, and I’m on the side of the argument in favor of them. I think it’s cool whenever new boundaries are broken with art on Magic cards, and I think representing Ixalan’s characters on coins is inventive and novel. Not to mention they hired an engraver from the British Royal Mint to design Ghalta and Mavren! Perhaps we’ll see these Treasure Frames in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan in the future.
